Classic Travel Tales
Travelogues got me through the pandemic. I needed to be taken to another place, another time—to find an escape from the turmoil and stress of those years.
Mark Twain, with acute observation and timeless humor, took me around the world in 1895. Richard Henry Dana Jr. took me along when he dropped out of Harvard in 1834 and served as a common sailor—“before the mast”—sailing to California, then part of Mexico. Nellie Bly, an adventurous New York journalist, took me with her in 1889 when she raced around the world in 72 days, beating what Jules Verne had imagined could be done in 80.
Now retired after nearly 40 years working as an editor, I am making these posts and my website—Classic Travel Tales—my retirement project. I’ll keep reading travelogues and excerpting fun stories and quotes here.
I’ll also note that I have a bachelor’s and a master’s in geography from Penn State—degrees which I really didn’t use in my career. So this project is also an opportunity to finally put that education to work!
